Location while in airplane mode

Hi all, I tested putting my iPhone and Apple Watch in airplane mode. Then I opened Drafts on my Apple Watch and created a new note. After turning airplane mode off on both devices, I can see on my iPhone that the location was captured. Did Drafts on my watch use GPS or the last known location? If using GPS, I was surprised how quickly it got a lock.

Anyhow, I am glad to see the location was recorded even if I don’t have an internet connection. I guess another test would be for me to change locations while in airplane mode and see if it still captures location?

Does anyone have insight into how Drafts is capturing location in airplane mode?

Generally speaking, the iOS/watchOS location APIs (CLLocationManager) return the last known position when in Airplane Mode.
