Inline Gemini: Free AI assistant for your text powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro

Hi everyone,

I created an action to bring Google’s Gemini AI directly into your writing workflow. This allows you to select any text (email draft, code, questions) and get an answer appended immediately below the cursor, no copy/pasting required.

The Models: These actions leverage the new Gemini 2.5 Pro, which is currently the smartest model available on Google’s free tier. It gives you high-level reasoning for free. I also included a Flash version for instant speed.

Note: If you want to use Gemini 3, you can also do that but you need a paid API key. More on that below.

Features:

  • Non-destructive: It appends the answer; it never overwrites your original text.

  • Inline Processing: Works perfectly on selected text blocks.

  • Secure: Uses Drafts’ native credential storage for your API key.

How to use:

  1. Get a free API Key from Google AI Studio.

  2. Select text in your draft.

  3. Run the action.

Note for Paid Users (Gemini 3.0): If you have a paid API plan and want to use Gemini 3.0 Pro, you can easily switch models. Just edit the script step in the action and change the model variable at the very top to "gemini-3.0-pro".

How do I “Select text in your Draft”? That appears to be a prerequisite to getting the direction to run/use the prompt with Gemini 2.5 Pro. I hope to be able to first create, using Gemini 3, a series of specialized prompts to polish my dictated text in Drafts and then choose the appropriate prompt for polishing my text using the actions that you have created and shared with your fellow Drafts users. Thank you for your kindness!

I think he just means the actions are designed to work on the text currently selected within a draft (like you would be selecting to copy and paste), not on the full text of the draft.
