Writers need character counts less than most users, but need word counts more.
If we could config which displays (one/the other/both) it would slightly streamline the UI and clarify the (word) count so it doesn’t get lost as a part of the chicken scratch in the corner of the window! 
Small thing, but a nice gift for writer users.
