Are there any plans to make Drafts use Markdown files for on-device file management, a la Obsidian? I’d love to use Drafts as my full-time notes app, but I love how Obsidian lets me manage my own files.
No, that’s not going to change. Being built around a database is key to enabling the flexibility, performance, and many of the unique features of Drafts. Those would not be compatible with file-based storage.
You may find some of the unique advantages of Drafts can be in allowing you to leverage it for quick capture and ephemeral content alongside another file-based system like Obsidian for long-term organization and storage.
I second the idea of using Drafts for … well, drafts, and Obsidian for long term storage. It’s a great setup.
There are many reasons why, but the sync between devices might be at the top for me. I often access a note in drafts from many devices before it finally finds its home in some other application. Also, the deep integration with Shortcuts is wonderful.
Jumping in here, I’ve also found that using both Drafts and Obsidian together strikes a good balance. Drafts shines for quick capture and editing across devices, especially with Shortcuts and automation. Once things settle or need more structure, moving them into Obsidian’s file-based system makes sense. It seems like both tools are just optimized for different parts of the note lifecycle.
